Using rich tones, Russell here depicted a common scene from rural Hawaii. Plantation workers quit the cane fields in late afternoon, their lengthening shadows confirming a long day's work. The winding red dirt road carries the viewer into the scene, through miles of agricultural land which, punctuated by smokestacks of the sugar mills, rise up through the haze to the distant mountains beyond.
