In this pivotal painting, Tennent broke from the European standards of representation and beauty that informed her first paintings of local women, such as Hawaiian Girl (1925) and Girl with Apples (1926). Having flipped the figure over and abandoned the angularity of those earlier works, Tennent began embracing the circular brushstrokes and voluptuous forms that would characterize her signature works of the mid-1930s.
